I created this layout for a Studio Calico monochromatic layout challenge. It documents my general commuting experience over the past 16 years. This layout features hand misted, punched and rolled flowers, and paint! Love that I pulled that out. I truly love this monochromatic look too. Must try this again soon.

Journaling: Since moving to Madison in 1995 I have taken the bus to work every day. I started on the "E" route from Park Street to downtown. Now I take the 38 bus from our house. I leave the house at 7:07 AM and get to work around 8:00 AM. It can be a cold, wet, smelly and bone-jarring commute. But it is my reality. The saving grace is being able to listen to music that I love and that I can't play at home around the kids. For all of that, I get to pay a $2 cash fare for a one-way ticket. Thankfully though my job has been covering the expense for several years.

It's that time of year again for the release of new scrapping goodness at the Winter Craft and Hobby Show. There is nothing more inspiring to me than to browse new goodies on a regular basis. I so wish I could be there to see it all in person. Ah well...maybe someday I'll get back into a sponsored design team position. THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Chugging Along

Well, the past two weeks have not been as fulfilling as they could have been and that's why I skipped posting last week. I feel like my life has been very routine and boring. Nothing wrong with that, just not interesting to read about on a blog.

Along with that, do you ever have days (weeks?) that you and your significant other just do not "click." That has been me the past two weeks. Not that we were fighting, but we didn't exactly get along either.

On Sunday I felt like my Hubby was really working against me. A new Bible study had just started on the book of Revelations. The Bible study would have been a new and interesting experience for us. We needed to leave the house a little over an hour earlier than we would normally for our church service and I knew this would be a challenge for the four of us.

But that morning we were doing fine getting ready, though the kids were grumbling, when Hubby vocalized his opinion that "I (he) have better things to do" and "you can study the Bible at home" and things similar to that. I told him politely that if he didn't want to go that would be fine, just drop me off and go do something else for an hour. Of course that obvious answer didn't solve the problem because he kept picking at my desire to go and did attend with me. Afterward his comments were "We don't have the materials" and "we didn't sign up ahead of time" I offered to talk to Pastor Mike (the study leader) about it but I was sure that it wasn't too late to join in. But, no, once we found a seat for church Hubby still kept on his grumpy face and I didn't want to put up with it anymore so I said that I was going to go back downstairs where the Bible study had taken place and see if I can find someone to give me a ride in the future so he didn't have to waste his time with the Bible study. Of course he wasn't pleased with this solution at all and continued to make comments. When I returned he immediately said "you're going to look really stupid when you have to call them and let them know you don't need a ride." I ignored him. I hadn't found a ride, but I did get several people to get in touch with so I was confident a ride could be found.

Later that afternoon one of the church members called me and said she'd spoken to someone who was willing to give me a ride and gave me their phone #. I haven't called them yet, and I haven't told Hubby that I have someone who can give me a ride.

I am positive that he will not want me to get a ride and will go along with me instead but, really, what fun will it be to go through 10 more weeks of this when he obviously isn't supportive of it?

You know what the kicker is? The church sermon dealt with the importance of reading and knowing the Bible and bringing faith into our home. Couldn't have been more appropriate.

It is also the current lesson in my daughter's catechism class. The pastor discussed God as our father and how he cares for us. Then he asked my daughter, what does your Dad do that your Mom doesn't do and do you know what she said?? She said "watch TV!" Can you believe that? Really, I do watch TV. I just do not watch any series, and could go days without turning it on, if it were just me in the house.

So that's my current life in a nutshell. Uncertainty, poor communication, irritation, and monotony. I am positive next week will be better. :o)

PS - One other thing that is super exciting, TWO of our baby chicks laid their first eggs yesterday!! They are a really pretty peach color. I will have to take a picture. How coincidental is it that they both started on the same day? And our one older chick who lays nearly every day did not lay one yesterday! I think she was probably totally confused as to why the nesting boxes were no longer all hers. This morning she laid a huge one.

This is my niece who I think the world of. Isn't she beautiful? A few custom elements in this page. I printed that hummingbird from clip art and watercolored it. I also stamped the library card tucked behind my title. I also used one of my signature butterflies in the bottom left-hand corner.

The only "old" supply on this layout is the little Making Memories label tucked into the border near the photo. The rest is from recent Studio Calico kits.

MOXIE FAB - Use Your Punch in an Interesting Way Challenge

I created two cards for the Moxie Fab card challenge utilizing punches.

"You're Special" utilized a cupcake punch and a circle punch. The little cupcake bottoms were run through a paper crimper to mimic a real paper cup liner.

The second card "Birthday Wishes" uses a circle punch through some bold stripe patterned paper that was backed with solid cardstock.

It is an odd winter here in Wisconsin...we have only had one snowfall that accumulated on the ground so far this winter and melted soon after. We typically have snow on the ground until spring but not this year. No white Christmas, no snow storm on New Year's.

I thought this was a very creative way to add some winter to your home.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Welcome 2012!

Each day seems to pass by faster than the last and I wish everything would just slow down. However, each day I grow wiser, calmer and more appreciative of my life, family and inner strength. I love my life just the way it is. This moment. Today.

I am trying to pull those feelings from my heart and appreciate each moment as it comes. That is my January "experiment" and I am going to share those results here. I have come to realize that I am really good at letting life happen around me and not so good at making it happen. Here's some of the highlights from this past week.

New Year's Eve ended up being low key. Hubby has been working a ton and got two late appointments that afternoon while I went and had my hair colored (yay girl time!). We ended up going out to eat at the Olive Garden. It was a long wait to get a table so I enjoyed a lovely glass of Riesling - one of my favorite varieties. After dinner we went home and watched Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The ball dropped in New York about 20 minutes later and then the kids and Hubby went off to bed. I stayed up until the music note dropped in Nashville (Wisconsin's actual 2012). They let off fireworks and my heart rejoiced and I clapped my hands and thought...hello 2012. I am so ready for you!

Sunday Hubby and I had a grocery date. I've so enjoyed being able to do the grocery shopping and letting the kids stay at home. Hubby and I have made it special by stopping for coffee before hand (a treat for both of us) and making it a fun time rather than a chore. We bought a raspberry pie for dessert that night and I made fresh whipped cream. Another treat. (I've also come to realize that a lot of my pleasures in life revolve around food and drinks...). After the kids went to bed Hubby and I celebrated the new year with a bottle of sparkling Muscato and local gourmet chocolates in front of the fireplace and played Yaht-zee and Bop It until 1 in the morning.

Monday was a holiday for me. I slept until 9:00 AM (VERY late for me!) while Hubby made homemade blueberry pancakes. I did some scrapbooking and cleaning and organizing around the house. I watched a ton of reality TV--Food Network and TLC. Enjoyed a nice quiet day.

Tuesday I came home to homemade French onion soup that my Hubby made from scratch (broth and all) following Julia Child's cookbook recipe. He even stopped to get fresh bread from the bakery (I could have eaten the whole loaf...YUM!) My daughter had confirmation class that night so we dropper her off and stopped at Panera to grab some coffees and do some reading while we waited for her.

Wednesday I went out to lunch with a coworker (more girl time...hello!) and had a nice quiet day otherwise. Spent the evening listing some things in my shop and some computer work. Right now (as I type) I'm enjoying a yummy Rum-Chata over ice.

None of these things are wild but they are all special occurrences in my life and to think that almost every day contained some sort of treat makes me a very happy woman.
I'd say my experiment is going well, but not as good as I'd like it to. I want to focus more on appreciating my Hubby and getting in touch with those that are near and dear to me that I haven't spoken to in awhile.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - End of 2011

I can't believe 2011 is winding down. It has been a marvelous year! I am also excited for 2012 because I have a personal project I will be working on in the month of January and sharing on this blog. More about that next week. :o)

First off, a little gripe. Movie ratings. When exactly did the movie ratings get so whacked? My kids are 10 and 13 now so once in awhile we find it nice to enjoy a movie together. Problem is, I have yet to find a PG-13 rated movie that is not completely inappropriate for children. We recently sat down to watch Little Fockers together. We know that this movie series does get a bit risque and were prepared for some of that but in the first 10 minutes alone there was discussion of erectile dysfunction, condoms, sexual positions, sexual appetite and a drawing of a penis. We turned the movie off. Luckily most of this went over the kids' heads but it just leaves me wondering who in the heck comes up with these ratings? I know it is also common to find swearing on daytime television these days. Where does it end? It has been very challenging to expose the kids to these more "mature" movies in a gradual & appropriate way. If you have any advice, please share. Otherwise I think we'll be sticking to PG and G rated movies for awhile longer.

Last week I read about a girl named Katie Davis on one of the blogs I subscribe to. Katie is 22 years old and is incredibly inspiring. When I watch this video she just appears to glow and she inspires and humbles me with her courage. Please do take the time to watch Katie explain her mission. You may want to grab a few tissues first.

Now, an update on us. We had an excellent Christmas spending time with both sides of the family, enjoying a wide variety of delicious food and drink and lots of laughter. I was really wiped out on Monday!

K's "big" gift this year - a new alarm clock / radio with mood light and nature sounds that she can dock her iPod in.

Left by Santa in her stocking - Reindeer Peeps. Aren't they precious? Other gifts she received this year, Just Dance 3 and Cooking Mama for Wii, Mario Kart for DS, iTunes gift card, Pirates of the Caribbean DVD, lots of drawing stuff, three books, Target gift card, perfume, money and candy.

Hubby received gourmet maple syrup and lots of martial arts books.

Awww....my guys. I had to take this pic several times because neither of them wanted to give me a nice smile.

K's "big" gift from us--Madden NFL 12 for Wii. Other gifts he received include Spore Hero and Star Wars for the Wii, Mario Kart for the DS, two books (Kingdom Keepers and the 2012 Guinness Book of World Records), a remote controlled helicopter, Power Rangers, Hex Bugs, iTunes gift card, money, Target gift card, a giant Nerf dart gun and candy,

My gift - some snazzy new sheepskin slippers. Aren't they sexy? I/we also received Chili's and Kohl's gift cards, liquor (Rum-Chata, which if you haven't tasted it is delicious!), a frame with our last name hand crocheted inside of it, a carving set and for White Elephant gift exchange we ended up with a pasta dinner set for two, Paula Deen's cupcake mix, water bottle, cozy socks and a Justin Beiber blanket. (This resulted from many underhand dealings after the gift opening.)

So, plans to ring in the New Year? We will probably stay at home again this year unless I can find something family appropriate yet fun for all. Until next year...

In case you are zipping through my blog, please take a moment to click on the link at the end of my post. If I could ask everyone in the world to listen to this message I would.

I can't believe it's been a month since my last update. Time sure does fly!

I had a mini meltdown the weekend before Thanksgiving that resulted in some tears and much-needed conversation between me and my family. In short, I was feeling unloved and lonely. Those are the feelings I've struggled with the most in my life. Having a few years of therapy has helped tremendously and I've gotten much better at asking for things or seeking out the things I feel I'm lacking. That weekend though I failed miserably. I told my family I wouldn't be spending Thanksgiving with them after all because I felt so pushed down on everyone else's priority list. I was fed up with feeling that way.

Long story short, I had a talk with each of my family members and - on my end at least - things feel settled.

Thanksgiving did turn out to be really good. I did visit my family for a short while that morning, and then had lunch on Hubby's side of the family. The best part of the day was that I got to see both of my brothers and my parents as well as Hubby's side of the family. To me, family is extremely important and I would give up almost anything to preserve that bond.

That is part of the reason I think this time of year is a struggle for me emotionally. People get so busy and so obsessed with buying things. I continue to be amazed at the amount of stuff that gets exchanged. Life is not about stuff. I have stuff, and I continue to buy stuff, but my life has never been about acquiring more stuff. I would freely give this all up if it meant having a better, closer relationship with my friends and family.

This is what has been on my mind lately and (as usual) our church sermon was incredibly timely. This is a must listen, particularly at this time of year: Grace Creates Unity.

Both of these layouts were inspired by similar ones done by one of my favorite designers - Danielle Layton. I bookmark almost every one of her layouts...such clean, colorful designs.

This layout was using the October Studio Calico kit "Field Guide." The photos aren't great but they capture a moment worth remembering.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Fall Has Arrived

Our oldest chicken, Adelita, laid her first egg on Saturday. My son has been checking twice a day since then to see if she's laid more...he's so excited! But she has not produced another yet. Come spring time she should produce about 2-3 eggs a week.

For the second (or third?) year in a row we've had pleasant weather for trick or treating! It was in the 40's I'd say, but no rain and no snow! We again took the kids to Willy Street. That area of the city is so fun -- everyone really gets into the decorating, costumes and spooky things for the kids.

This year my daughter went as Alice in Wonderland and my son was an Ice Ninja. They each gathered about a gallon of candy before we headed home. That will last them a long time.

I made treat boxes for the trick-or-treaters (we ended up having none at all this year), and Hubby made this dracula jack-o-lantern with a knife and an internet picture...not bad, eh?

The most notable treat of all, though, was for the adults. One house gave out warm spiked apple cider and another gave out shots of apple pie drink with whipped cream on top. See...I told you this neighborhood really gets into it!

We have also had an interesting couple of weeks contemplating a move from the city into the country. We found a farmette outside of Deerfield that we all really like, but it is a one bathroom house and I can't see that working out. It would take some work to get the house and property into tip-top shape but it definitely has potential. For now, this house is out, but the location and land were almost perfect.

Thinking about moving and leaving our house now - which I love - is stressful but we long for that country setting. I guess we'll see what the future holds. Perhaps that perfect house will come along that we know is the one for us.

To finish out this past week, I went to an ENT specialist at the UW Hospital to look at some ear pressure and congestion along with clicking noises I get when swallowing. Guess what? I'm normal. Hearing's good, no fluid in the ears, no wax, no strange deviations, no explanation. That is one of the reasons I dislike getting things checked out unless they are really, really serious. All ailments seem to be inconclusive and I feel like I've wasted time and money. I am grateful that nothing is wrong, but I feel so disappointed that - for now - it is something I just have to learn to deal with. Frustrating.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Our evenings

It has been an absolutely gorgeous fall week with temperatures starting in the 40's and 50's overnight and reaching into the 70's the past few days. The leaves are turning brilliant colors--red, yellow and orange--which really stand out against the blue sky. I need to get some photos before the snow starts flying. Ha ha...kidding, though maybe not.

Almost every evening you can find me outside in our backyard soaking up the last of the day's sunshine and letting the chickens roam around our yard. Sometimes I read and sometimes I just relax. If the kids aren't busy they will come outside too.

Last night was just like that though short-lived. It is pitch black by 7:00 PM. Pretty soon I'll be coming home in the dark. This is what our evening looked like:

When I'm not outside you can find me in my scrap room creating some custom popcorn boxes and treat bags for Four Eyes Designs. I've had several orders recently and they've kept me busy.

I made 24 of these for a little girl's birthday party.

And I'm making 15 of these for a Saved by the Bell themed bachelorette party. I recreated a design similar to the show's logo and am using three different phrases on them. I need to finish these up in the next couple of days.

Not sure if I'll have a post next Thursday as I will be in Denver for a conference. Looking forward to visiting a new city!

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Nurture Each Other

In 2007 Hubby and I attended a marriage seminar conducted by Mark Gungor called "Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage." We weren't having problems at the time but saw this as an opportunity to strengthen our marriage. You can read my post about it here.

I think it's so important to nurture your marriage through the years and not just tend to it when things aren't looking so good.

One of the ways I've continued to nurture my marriage is by continuing to listen to Mark Gungor on his daily radio show. Last week Friday he had one of the best shows full of marital advice that I've heard and I would like to share it with you. You can listen to the radio podcast here:

I have to tell you that Mark is extremely crazy but he is also full of wonderful, Christian-based advice that would help any couple who is willing to listen.

This week we have put the babies into the chicken coop with Adelita. I didn't think they were ready yet, because even when they were roaming free in the yard Adelita would act aggressively and peck at them if they got too close. We have had them spend hours cooped up together but interestingly, the babies stay outside when Adelita is in the coop. I am not ready to put them all inside of the coop for the night so each night we return the babies to the garage where they've been staying. One of these days we'll force them to be together overnight and pray for the best.

It is so funny to watch Marley and Smores. They love to fly at each other and they look like little popcorn kernels exploding. One flies toward the other and then that one flies away. It's pop, pop, pop! I need to take a video of this - it is so cute!!

What else...boring daily life stuff and (hallelujah!) finally getting sales at Four Eyes Designs after a month or so of nothing. Right now the popcorn boxes seem to be super hot, especially customized ones, so I've been busy with that.

This weeks guilty time waster? Watching the Michael Jackson / Conrad Murray trial. Love how speedy the questioning has been so far. Anyone else watching?

I didn't tell you about my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I took the day off of work -- mainly to pick up my son from early release -- but I was also able to spend the morning doing fun things (scrapping, reading, enjoying some coffee). I knew something was up though because my kids were WAY too excited about my birthday, though they never spilled the beans. In fact they told me that it was "going to be my best day ever - even better than the day I had them!"

Before Hubby left for work he told me that there would be something coming that afternoon. I demanded that he tell me what in the world is going on! I just knew that the excitement surrounding my birthday had to be for a good reason.

Well, as I was starting to suspect, my family had bought me a new 50" plasma tv - something I had been dreaming about for several months - and a new tv cabinet for it to sit on. The tv is awesome! Hubby chose a cherry finish tv stand with glass panel doors and it looked completely out of place with our old country style furnishings sooo...I had just happened to read about a liquidation sale at one of our local furniture places and I suggested we go look at a new coffee table and end table since our current oak tables were in serious need of refinishing. To be honest, I had been ready for a new "style" as well so the more modern cherry finish with glass paneling that Hubby had chosen was perfect. The furnishings there were still plentiful and we ended up buying a whole new living room set - a rich chocolate brown microfiber and deep brown leather two-tone couch and loveseat with end tables, coffee table and sofa table with rock inlay in a cherry finish and two lamps for the price we would have paid for the sofa alone. We couldn't pass it up. So now, suddenly, I have a whole new living room all thanks for my birthday!!

We are doing it all backward because now we need to decide what color we want to paint the walls -- think that will wait for awhile yet though.

I will have to take some better photos during the daylight and when it's cleaned up a bit but here's a sneak at the new additions.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - What If?

I have been off all week. I missed a dental appointment on Tuesday, every day I've had to ask myself which day of the week it was, and yesterday I completely forgot to post a Thursday Thoughts. I can't wait for the weekend. Maybe my internal day-clock will be reset.

This week is less of an update and more of my Thoughts.

What if...

I am currently reading this book about a 12 year old boy who has leukemia and he was just told that he'd have about two weeks to live. I thought about that for a long time this morning.

What if...

If I knew that when I close my eyes tonight I would never open them again, how would I spend my last day?

Would it be the same as every other day? Would I go about my life like I have 1,000 tomorrows to live or would I spend it holding my family members so close we became one breathing unit? Would I spend it crying for the loss I knew was coming or would I (could I?) spend it with new enthusiasm to experience everything I loved just one more time?

The honest answer: I don't know.

Then I got to thinking about some of the ways I passively spend my time, reading blogs, message boards and the like. Do these things really enrich my life?

What if each of us had a number above our heads showing how many days we had left to live. Would we change the way we treat one another? Would we expect more of ourselves? Would we show more respect and kindness to others?

I have observed that women - particularly on the internet - can be quite brutal to one another. And that makes me wonder how much we truly benefit our lives by spending our precious time there?

I think about creating a "bucket list" and I don't even know where to begin. There are so many things I'd like to do.

I have a gazillion craft ideas all spinning in my head at once. I usually feel like I'm walking down a grocery store aisle looking straight ahead. My peripheral vision catches so many things all around me--colors, sizes, uses, ideas--that it can be overwhelming.

I want to write. Story ideas keep floating around but I can't/don't even focus my energies on them. How can I squeeze it in?

My family. If they knew my time was coming to an end, would they love me differently? Or would we all continue living our own busy lives? Connected through blood, but far apart in real life?

So many questions I don't even know where to begin. And today, my day of pondering "what if" I have a massive migraine and feel like crawling into bed. But what if ... what if this really were my very last day? How will I spend it?

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Enjoying the last of summer

I took last Thursday off of work so that Hubby and I could celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary. I suggested breakfast at the Pancake House (not the chain restaurant) and enjoyed buttermilk pancakes, a fried egg and bacon. It was such a gorgeous day out that we decided to head up to Devil's Lake for the day. Even though Hubby and I are both Wisconsin natives neither of us had been there.

It was about an hour's drive from Madison. Weather was in the 70's with a nice breeze and sunny skies. We arrived about 10 AM. I had a bright idea to rent a boat and spend some time out on the lake. Hubby decided a paddle boat would work better for the four of us rather than a canoe or row boat. That was his bright idea. After pushing the paddle boat away from shore and getting my good tennis shoes soaking wet, I jumped in and we quickly learned what a pain in the ass navigating a paddle boat is. I was ready to go back within 15 minutes and Hubby was not thrilled with this activity either. We pushed on, cycling our legs for nearly two hours, taking turns with the kids when we needed a break. After we got used to the cycling it wasn't so bad but our return trip was against wind and it felt like we were not moving at all.

After the boat ride we had some lunch and then sat on the beach for awhile. I noticed my legs were feeling like they were getting sunburned though they weren't pink whatsoever. I decided it was time to get out of the sun. I don't typically sunburn but apparently being out on the water was all it took. My legs got bright red soon after we left and I regretted only putting sunscreen on my arms thinking we would be hiking.

It was a great time spent together and that's all that matters.

Sunday we went to Hubby's work picnic. They rented sumo suits and Hubby had fun kicking some booty.

Today is my 21st wedding anniversary! WOW!!!

Had a very nice visit with my mother-in-law this past weekend including a yummy dinner at Olive Garden. My first time ordering clams and mussels and it was very good! We played some Yahtzee and watched "Race to Witch Mountain." Other than that I just enjoyed being outdoors as much as possible.

I did some clothes shopping at New York & Company on Saturday. I bought three tops and a pair of ballet flats. I have been wanting to downsize my wardrobe but I got to a point where I have to make some more tough choices on what to keep and what to give away. You know that stuff you keep in your closet just because you might wear it one day? Yeah, I still have that to deal with. However, I have decided to limit any new purchases to raspberry, teal, chocolate brown, black and white. By staying in a fixed color palette it should be much easier to mix and match pieces.

I also had some early birthday surprises over the weekend. My mother-in-law had me pick out a new curling iron and blow dryer to replace my old dying ones and I love the cute new tools!! Haven't been excited about blowing my hair in...well...forever!

My son came up to me in the mall and placed a small votive candle under my nose and asked me how I liked the scent. To be honest, I was trying to finish up my clothes shopping and didn't care for the distraction, but I sniffed and then he had me smell another, and another. I looked over at him and see his small bag and ask him why he's carrying a bag of candles. He tells me that he bought them.

What? With your own money? I ask.

Yep.

Why would you do that?? oh, wait, my birthday's coming up. Did you...

With a look of realization that his surprise was just ruined, "Ummm....happy birthday." he says while handing me the bag, now with an adorable sweet smile.

I couldn't believe it. He thought to buy me a gift with his own money and without prompting?? Priceless I tell ya. It's my best birthday ever, and it hasn't even arrived yet. ;o)

Sunday was a treat as well. Our friend Ben came over for his last supper prior to departing for ~~death row~~ California. Seeing as how the state is going to drop into the ocean at any moment we wanted to make it a special one.

We made peppery steak Bearnaise and mixed vegetables and shared a bottle of Beaujolais.

After that gourmet feast we decided to head to Olive Garden for dessert. We ordered one of everything - nine desserts for four adults and two kids. The link I've included does not list the pumpkin cake we had as well. We drew quite a bit of attention from many of the servers asking to join us. It was our first time ever ordering "one of everything" and we had lots of laughs and sugar highs before it was over. We actually ate almost all of the dessert.

The rest of our chickens finally arrived this week! Here they are at four days old. They are still a bit afraid of us so it's hard to get a good picture and they are soooo tiny!!

In other good news, I was able to visit with my younger brother last weekend. We don't get to see each other often so it is always special to me when we do. It was one day after his birthday so I asked if I could make him a special treat and he requested cinnamon rolls so I woke up bright and early and made the best rolls ever! So light and fluffy and not doughy tasting at all. With all of the work involved in making breads from scratch it sure is awesome when they turn out!

In not-so-good news, our dishwasher is having a tantrum and only works when it wants to. We will have to get it serviced because I will not do without a dishwasher!

On top of that, our water softener died and our refrigerator needs a new seal. I tell ya, why do these things always happen in waves?

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Riding through life

I can't remember if I posted this but about a month ago I started back on daily Fluoxetine (generic Prozac) because I kept going through these periods of just wanting to cry for no reason, curl up under the covers and sleep for a week.   It had been about a year since I'd taken it regularly and I experienced these symptoms that entire time but hoped they would ease up. They didn't. So, I reluctantly agreed to give the Fluoxetine another try. About a week after starting it I remembered why I hated this drug so much. It makes me incredibly SLEEPY. I wake up tired, I nap regularly and never feel refreshed. I simply cannot take this drug. I am done. The doctor said we could explore other drugs if the Fluoxetine wasn't working but I don't want to do that either. In the meantime I can't wait to get some energy back even if I do feel sad for unexplained reasons. I'd much rather deal with that than the extreme tiredness that I'm feeling now.

This week the family has been doing it's thing. The kids are both out of school now and so far they haven't needed to call us at work or dial 911.   Lunches have been sandwiches or soup when it is just the two of them. Most of the time Hubby has been home at least part of the day so they have gone on a few adventures together while I'm here slaving away at work. They have gone on a bike ride, played softball and gone swimming.   Hubby took my daughter shopping at the mall and suffered through Aeropostale and Claire's while she found ways to spend her birthday money. They have perused Border's bookstore for deals and spent lots of time in the backyard, in front of the TV and/or computer. All in all a pretty relaxing summer I'd say.

We took the kids school supply shopping and I had a serious fit when I discovered my daughter required a new scientific calculator for 8th grade. It was $95 ON SALE. Seriously?? When I was in school we had one of the basic calculators that cost $10 or less at the local discount store.    What in the world do they need a calculator like this for?   It is more evidence of the technological world that the kids are living in. I am hoping that in three years my son can use this calculator too. In the meantime I'm considering buying stock in Texas Instruments.

We also browsed the clearance racks to pick up some clothes to put away for next spring. I got my daughter two pairs of jeans for this fall and two sleeveless tops. My son had a better selection and we got him four t-shirts and two pairs of shorts.

Now that I think about it the $260 shopping spree was pretty modest when you consider the cost of the calculator and clothes.

This week we upgraded the kids' bikes since they had outgrown the Treks that they had. I kinda miss those pink and orange bikes. This time my son picked a blue and yellow bike and my daughter a purple one. These bikes look huge compared to their older ones.
They are both ecstatic and had to show me their bikes as soon as they saw me coming up the driveway after work.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Full Circle

I was just reading my Thursday Thoughts from 2005 and 2006 written before blogging and sent via weekly emails to my family and friends. I always had a new surprise in there for you. Either a motivational piece, a recipe, a goals scorecard, a joke, etc. I would like to get back into that habit.

I was curious ... what was I doing exactly 5 years ago?

I was attending my very first CHA in Chicago!!! I met Tim Holtz for the first time. I was successful in getting sponsors for our review team and having a blast meeting new people and was completely out of my comfort zone. I woke up at 6:00 AM one morning and emailed Kevin my deepest thoughts about feeling overwhelmed and the need for decompression time. I ate an early breakfast on my own, read the paper and journaled my feelings. I also flew to Orlando for some work training and enjoyed a bit of time shopping in Downtown Disney. I came back feeling overwhelmed but confident in myself. I felt it was only a matter of time before I realized my dreams of writing and scrapping professionally.

I haven't achieved either goal but I still feel like they can both be a part of my life. After taking a long break from scrapping I just rejoined Studio Calico monthly kits and am super excited to get that box of new goodies every month. There is something so inspiring about receiving the new goods on a consistent basis.

I am also planning on doing some more submitting. As far as design team work goes, the right opportunity would have to come along and not require a huge time commitment.

My head is bursting with creative ideas for my shop and for a new novel. I have a great concept in mind for what would be a third novel-in-progress. I am going to hold off on starting that one and focus on finishing my other two first, at least have a first draft done. My writing time so far has been zero, but I am trying to approach the process as a second job of sorts that requires regular writing time. I am excited and will share my progress in weekly Wednesday posts.

As far as the family goes, everyone is doing great. My son has his last day of summer school tomorrow. My daughter is now trying to learn the guitar after my son has pretty much abandoned his progress. I also am interested in learning a bit of guitar so we may start having family guitar nights.

I am also making sure the kids do lots of reading this summer and doing book reports on them. The summer seems to be flying by!

This is a layout I did about my trip to New Orleans last year. Do you notice how I used my "3's" as "E's"? I also pulled out my tiny slot punch which hasn't seen daylight in ages.

Cindy and I enjoyed fresh beignets twice at the famous Cafe du Monde while we were in New Orleans. They are constantly busy day and night. The beignets are hot and fluffy deep fried dough covered in a pile of powdered sugar . . . yum! 10/10

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Celebrations Galore!

It was another weekend full of celebrations.

On Friday we drove to Pell Lake, WI for my niece, Kayla's, high school graduation party. She will be heading to Nashville to study music and further her career. It was nice to see that part of the family again. It certainly made me miss my sister as well. She has missed so much in the past five years.

We spent the night at my father-in-law's house for a belated father's day get-together. We watched Despicable Me on Saturday morning, had a wonderful scrambled eggs and bacon breakfast and then a quick lunch at Pizza Hut before heading back home.

Saturday was my son's 10th birthday so we gave him his gifts once we got home - a Bakugan DS game and a pencil drawing instructional book and sketch pad. He had requested breakfast in bed for his birthday. Since we were out of town we granted his wish on Sunday morning. I made pancakes with some chocolate chips sprinkled on top, sausages and a glass of oj.

Monday we just hung around home and went to the Monona fireworks in the evening. They were amazing! Unfortunately we were two blankets away from a very interesting group of people who appeared to be very high on something and taking pleasure in self-asphyxiation. It was quite disturbing to say the least and an uncomfortable sight to explain to the kids We alerted the police but the people explained their strange behavior as an asthma attack and the cops went on to other things. I'm curious as to what the heck they were doing and if self-asphyxiation is the "in" thing right now?

Tuesday was my daughter's 13th birthday. She also requested breakfast in bed. I made her chocolate chip muffins and a fruit cup. She had wanted her room painted so we worked on that all day. She picked out a bright teal blue paint color. Her room looks so different and I was so sore by the end of the day!

This weekend we'll be off to the last of our graduation parties this summer, but then have our kids' birthday party the following weekend.

Sorry I skipped a week in there...where does the time go?

Father's Day was a lot of fun this year. I was able to visit my Dad and give him his card personally. I loved the way the card turned out so much I made another one for my shop. We picked up a rotisserie chicken and I made a yummy peach, onion and basil salad (from one of the recent Martha Stewart mags), and some cheesy fried potatoes for dinner. It was a lovely day.

I did a good job on planning ahead for Hubby this year. Since he's been a daddy for 12 years I decided we should tell him 12 things that we appreciate about him and match a gift to that. The kids and I took some large tags and added what we appreciated to the front, decorated it all nicely, and then on the back I had them write specific things in their own words and handwriting. I tied each one of the tags to its coordinating gift and we gave them to him throughout the day. The kids loved bringing him the presents! It actually got to be a battle between them as to who gave him the last present and who got to go next. Here's a picture of the pile of gifts with their tags attached and the father's day card I made for him.

He's a great daddy and I think he really enjoyed the surprises!!

Last week we watched my niece. It had been 10 years since we were responsible for a little person. My daughter did a FABULOUS job taking care of her. She just loves, loves, loves playing mama, and I know she's going to make a great mother one day. My niece is extremely well behaved and all in all we had an excellent week. If the weather had been nicer we would have ventured out more but we had a good time hanging out at home.

My daughter got her braces on this past Thursday. She did great during the 90 minute ordeal. Her teeth hurt quite a bit for a couple of days and I found out that children's ibuprofin no longer works with her so we switched to adult. She had a hard time swallowing the pill but she managed and they worked. She also talked Dad into buying Culver's on his way home from work...strawberry shake...score!

Lastly, our little chickaroo is now 4 weeks old and has gotten to be just a bit smaller than a football and almost entirely feathered. The feathers around her neck are a lovely golden yellow - so pretty! She is in the chicken coop full time and loves any human interaction. She has chosen to find some pretty high spots to settle into but seems unsure of herself. She also loves it when we cup her from underneath and let her legs dangle. It is amazing how much you can become attached to a chicken. Her three mates will be coming in August sometime. Until then she rules the roost, literally.

Just enjoyed one of these babies from Sweet Impressions. The guy said it had complex flavors and boy was he right! My first time enjoying this type of flavor and it was quite yummy! Reminded me of a pretzel. Now my Friday is complete. *sigh*

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Nobody is perfect

I had such a great weekend celebrating my niece's first birthday! She is so cute and I've adored spoiling her! We played ladder ball and bocce ball as well. It was the perfect weather for a get together!

I have been feeling good and have been working my way toward writing again. I promise to share some of my writing soon. I have so many emotions that just need to get out on paper.

I had a meeting with my mental health med doctor on Wednesday and I told him that I've had a week or two every month that I just seem so down and feel like crying at the drop of a hat. I know this is due to some wacky hormones...perhaps perimenopause because my cycles have not been as predictable as they once were. I am frustrated because I have no reason to feel this way and yet I do. He tells me that it is part of my genetic brain chemistry and will always be there, no matter what. I just have to be okay with some ups and downs once in awhile. It is my analytical brain that is not okay with this...it's just not right! I am so fortunate and loved...I have no right to feel this way. My coping mechanisms are all working and I have treated myself to a half hour in the sunshine, an afternoon coffee or even some clothes shopping to get me through those days. I think what frustrates me most is that I feel great most of the time and just wish it stayed like that, knowing that nothing in my life has changed to make me feel so blue. These are many of the thoughts I'm planning on turning into future character development for one of my stories.

The protesters are back in action at the capitol setting up tents along the outside of the capitol square that has been dubbed "Walkerville." It is loud. Horns blaring, drums pounding, car horns honking, people chanting. It is enough to give me a headache, and it has seriously cut into my walking around at lunch time. I don't want to be anywhere near all of this, especially when the crowds have gathered. I don't have the answers, but I really do not believe the protests that have been taking place are effective ways of finding an agreeable solution no matter what your party affiliation.

Adelita is in the coop now. I felt so wrong the first night she was out there instead of in our garage. I just hated that feeling of insecurity from the separation. It is amazing how attached you can become to a chick!! She continues to grow so much and is nearly all feathers now. This pic here was taken a couple days before her 3rd week with us. I love her little tweets. :o)

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - fun times and a joke

We had a fun week celebrating two of my nieces' graduations and visiting with friends and family. We played ladder ball, frisbee, ate and chatted.

We went to the Mallard's opening game (my first time there).

and spent lots of time with Adelita. We tried letting her walk around in our bathroom and she was too scared to move. We put her outside in her coop for a little while and she seemed to enjoy that but it was too hot for her and we brought her back inside after about 30 minutes. She is losing her fuzz and getting lots of feathers.

She loves to follow our hands when we play with her and even plays a little Peek-a-boo.

It is summer here now, 80's and 90's and very humid. I broke down and turned on the air. Bad thing is with all of the dramatic weather we have had a lot of thunderstorms. We are currently in our basement under a tornado warning as I type (Wednesday night). My daughter packed up a basket full of stuff. She is funny. Hubby came home just minutes after we came downstairs and he brought the dog down with him. He said "I can't believe you didn't bring him down here," (He has never wanted him in the basement before.) So, it's a cozy evening sitting in the basement. Whee!

UPDATE: No tornadoes last night but the pressure in my ears changed twice, freaked me out. Lots of tree limb damage around Wisconsin but everything is fine in our yard except for my peony bushes are completely flattened. They looked awesome too.

And a joke I received in my in box this morning made me LOL.

Skinny Dipping

Ron, an elderly man in Florida, had owned a large farm for several years.
He had a large pond in the back.
It was properly shaped for swimming, so he fixed it up nice with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some orange and lime trees.
One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over.
He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.
As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond.
He made the women aware of his presence, and they all went to the deep end.
One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"
Ron frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the pond naked."
Holding the bucket up Ron said, "I'm here to feed the alligator."

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - they grow up too fast!

Happy Birthday to my niece who turned one year old on Wednesday!! I can't wait to spoil her in person!

This past week we celebrated Memorial Day weekend. My mother-in-law came up to stay for a few days so we had fun visiting, watching movies, and just relaxing. We also had a lovely meal at one of my favorite places...Outback Steakhouse. The last couple of times I've gone there I've ordered the Tilapia with Lump Crab Meat and it is super yummy!

Sunday was mostly rainy so we waited for the weather to clear before heading out to the Brat Fest. We finally got there around 7:00 PM and it was cold enough that we needed a light jacket. We had brats, roasted corn and, of course, funnel cakes. We sat listening to the music for awhile but with the clouds gathering overhead and the soggy earth beneath our feet we decided to head back home instead of waiting to see if it would stay dry for the fireworks they had planned.

Monday we went to the Memorial Day parade. The kids got a haul of candy, pencils, and even a toothbrush this year. I enjoyed the bands, the bagpipe players, the top hat whistler guys and the Clydesdale horses the best. We spent the afternoon enjoying the weather and visiting with a friend. This day it was in the 80's and so hot and humid we could hardly believe the difference 24 hours could make to our temperature. The rest of this week is supposed to be wonderful weather so we are all happy about that.

Tuesday we have had our baby chick for one whole week and it is amazing how much she's grown. My daughter named her Adelita (Ah-dah-lee-tah). Her feathers are growing in and she's practicing flying in circles. It was only a few days after we'd had her that we noticed a new, more social sounding chirp. Now she has a light "tweet tweet" when we are around and a louder, deeper and whiny sounding squawk when we leave. Here are some photos of her at @ one week old.

Wednesday Hubby and I enjoyed a nice lunch at a local Mexican restaurant and then we went to my daughter's school for a little skit they prepared as part of their class work. I'm sure I'm somewhat biased here, but she did the best of everyone in her class. At least she knew her lines and expressed them with some emotion. Most of the kids needed reminders of their lines.

Lots of stuff going on over the next few months. I am trying hard to get the blog to have a daily post but it will take me some time to get there. Until next time...

THURSDAY THOUGHTS - Little Chick

We received our chicks this week. Unfortunately only one of the four survived the transit. This is the Easter Egger. Isn't she cute?

She loves to chase our hands when we move them nearby. She chirps at us when we are around and seems to get lonely when we leave. I can't believe how she seems to have grown already. Hubby watched her fall asleep last night. Wish I'd seen that. So cute!

We should be getting the other three chicks sometime next week.

I ordered some new clothes from New York & Company this week...got an awesome deal on it and they all fit! A sassy white suit, floral top and a pretty raspberry colored cardigan, some yoga pants and a new purse. Wooohooo!

I just picked up a new "Polaroid" frame stamp and had fun playing with it. I will be offering these soon in my shop in various colors. The ones shown here have a text background on kraft cardstock and are inked with blue and green.

FOUR EYES DESIGNS - Shop Update

I had a request for some custom Loopy Lavender buttons similar to these that are listed in my shop but in 3/4" size. I had so much fun creating them!

I am so pleased because finally I've found a sealant that I am comfortable will hold up with gentle washing. I am also expanding my supplies and techniques. Slowly you will see the results being listed in the shop. I have lots to share but have had a hard time getting a good quality photograph in these dreary Wisconsin winter days. I need to invest in a good light box.
